paying off loans with zero balance credit card?
So I just got a tax bill of $2,500 right after getting a hospital bill of $5k so for my time, I'm in real debt (outside of college loans which is still a bazillion dollars). We are probably going to be put the $2,500 on credit either way and just pay it off as soon as possible. We have two loans that are around 6% interest that total $3,000 (both would be paid off or close to it by the end of the year) that I think we should put on our new credit card that has a zero interest until next February. My thinking is put all $5,500 on the credit card (out of $19k credit max) then make $550 payments on the card plus monthly expenses and therefore not have to pay any interest (basically only having to pay the principal on our two small loans that are going to be paid off at the end of the year anyways). My wife is concerned about putting it on a credit card with the 12.5% interest rate after Feb 2013 and worried about the possibility of not being able to have the cash flow of $550 a month (which based on past spending and our budget calculations we should have..so unlikely) or the possibility of an emergency (like another $5k hospital bill) or a possible job lose (unlikely as we both have 3+ years at our current job). One of our loans is through Sallie Mae that has a deferred payments option in case of job lose or disability. My wife has known people who have had credit debt issues that they have struggled with so she is very hesitate. Am I not being considerate of my wife's fear of credit card debt or do you think the zero interest card is a no-brainer? We already paid $2500 in hospital bills and we are setup to pay the other $2500 monthly. I really only mentioned the hospital bill to explain why we are in this situation and to convince you that we do our best to save money and are only in debt because of large unexpected bills not because of spending more than we make. Any other advice on the credit card debt question. I consider the first two answer to be in favor of not putting money on the credit cards.
